About the Course
Key stage 3
In years 7-9 all students have a one hour music lesson each week. This lesson includes a large amount of practical work; for example, singing, keyboard lessons, using percussion and other instruments.
The course content includes:
- Year 7 - An introductory unit "On the way", the music of Java and Bali, Major & Minor, Chords and Ragtime.
- Year 8 - Rock and Roll, Chords in Songs, Rondo, Folk Music and the music of Japan.
- Year 9 - Ground Bass, Samba, Music and the Media, The Blues and Theme and Variations.
Key stage 4
At key stage 4, students can choose to study music to GCSE level.
The course content includes:
- Music for special occasions
- Music for Film
- Music for Dance
- Popular Song from 1960 onwards
- Orchestral Landmarks
Students are assessed by a listening exam, two practical performances and two compositions.
GCSE music students receive subsidised instrumental lessons.
Instrumental Lessons
Instrumental lessons are available on the following instruments:
- Woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone)
- Brass (all instruments)
- Guitar (electric and acoustic)
- Bass guitar
- Drum kit and percussion
- Voice
- Keyboard and piano
- Cello
- Violin and viola
Lessons cost £13 per half hour individual lesson and further details are available from the Music Department
Extra-Curricular Activities
The school choir and band rehearse weekly and there is an annual school show, a Christmas talent show and a summer concert, as well as the opportunity to perform in the wonderful environment of Cartmel Priory as part of our school services. Our next production will be Oliver.
